Maybe it lay folded in a closet, waiting. Maybe it was loved. Maybe it was forgotten.

When I take that fabric into my hands, its story becomes part of mine.

I love touching natural materials — linen, cotton. They are part of nature, just as we are.

It all began with scraps.

Small pieces of fabric that I lay side by side, turn, cut into, stitch. Sometimes very seriously. Sometimes playfully.

And at some point, they become one.

I don’t start with a blank canvas.

I start with what was already there.

People have joined and stitched scraps together in different parts of the world.

In the Sufi tradition, wandering ascetics wore patched cloaks stitched from pieces of cloth. In Korea, women created jogakbo — patchwork made from small fabric remnants and used to wrap gifts and everyday objects.

In Lithuania, too, scraps of fabric and pieces of worn clothing were stitched together into patchwork — bedspreads, covers, objects made for everyday life.

Different countries. Different histories. And yet, in all of them, I see the same human gesture — don’t throw away. Preserve. Stitch together. Let it live on.

Patchwork doesn’t pretend to be perfect.

It remembers. It says:

here is what remained.

It doesn’t hide its seams, its threads.

On the contrary — they are part of its story.

It isn’t whole, because life isn’t whole either. It is made of separate moments — beautiful, uncomfortable, funny, painful, sometimes seemingly insignificant.

But placed side by side, they don’t become chaos.

They become a map.

A map of lives already lived, holding many stories at once.

Stitched together so they can remain.

Maybe that’s why, when I touch an old piece of fabric, I feel more than one life.

I feel my own, too.

Like one more patch already being stitched — through my daughters — into some future fabric of humanity that I myself will never see.

And a thought comes to me:

each of us is like a thread.

One thread alone is fragile. Easy to break.

But woven together, we become fabric.

We become stronger.

We can hold each other.

Maybe that’s why fabric, for me, isn’t simply a material for making a painting.

It is a language.

The past intertwines with the present. Someone else’s story with mine. Nature with human hands. Someone’s worn shirt with my stitch. My life with the life of someone I may never meet.

And I take these fabrics — I sew, cut, talk to them, play with them, fool around.

And they live on.

They become a painting.

A painting with a language of its own. One that will someday find someone with whom it can continue the conversation.

Maybe it will bring beauty into a room. Maybe it will comfort. Maybe it will encourage someone to keep going. Maybe someone will walk past it a hundred times, and only on the hundred-and-first will they suddenly see something.

Because art has its own quiet power.

A quiet language — simply to be near.

To be.

⸻

🇱🇹 tekstas žemiau.

Flow of Thoughts

Life shapes me. And I create art.

My name is Simona Finkelstein.

Sometimes it feels as though I chose the path of an artist.

But the longer I live, the more I realize that it wasn’t me who chose creativity.

It chose me.

I cannot remember a life without an inner calling to create.

I paint, photograph, draw, work with textiles, watercolor, acrylics, and oils. I dance. Sometimes I write.

To me, these are not different art forms.

They are one continuous flow of creation.

Flow of Thoughts (2016–2026) is a collection that grew over ten years alongside my own life.

This collection was not born in a studio.

It was born in life.

When my daughters were born, my world became the size of our home. For nearly five years, I barely painted. There was no studio. No canvases. No time that belonged only to me.

But creativity never disappeared.

It quietly kept growing within me.

Until one day I realized:

I cannot not paint.

I had to find another way.

So I began looking around.

At fabrics.

At old clothes.

At bed linen.

At pieces of linen that had already lived one life.

And at new linen, still waiting for its story to begin.

I arranged.

I stitched.

I cut.

I rearranged.

At first, I didn’t even realize I was making paintings.

It felt as though I was simply playing. Directing a small performance made of fabric, stains, textures, and threads. I was cutting and arranging little hidden worlds, like the “secrets” we made as children, uncovering them layer by layer.

That play became my meditation.

A way of listening to myself.

Once the textile piece was complete, I stretched it over a wooden frame, primed it, and painted.

Some works needed almost no paint at all.

The material spoke for itself.

Others were covered in thick layers of oil paint.

Only now do I understand that these works brought together everything I had learned throughout my life.

Scenography.

Textiles.

Painting.

Motherhood.

Life itself.

Perhaps that is why my work is filled with layers.

After all, we are made of layers too.

Memories.

Experiences.

Joy.

Loss.

Hope.

Over those ten years, it wasn’t only the paintings that changed.

I changed too.

Today, I no longer see Flow of Thoughts as simply a collection.

I see ten years of life.

Years of creating while watching my daughters grow.

And growing alongside them.

Learning to trust my intuition.

Creating became the place where I could return to myself.

A small space where I could flow with life instead of against it.

Without it, that flow would have been much harder.

This is not the end of the story.

It is simply the end of one “flow of thoughts”.

Because every flow naturally becomes the next.

🇱🇹 Lietuviškai

Negaliu netapyti

Gyvenimas kuria mane. O aš kuriu meną.

Esu Simona Finkelstein.

Kartais atrodo, kad pasirinkau menininkės kelią.

Bet kuo ilgiau gyvenu, tuo aiškiau suprantu – ne aš pasirinkau kūrybą.

Ji pasirinko mane.

Neprisimenu gyvenimo be noro kurti.

Tapau, fotografuoju, piešiu, kuriu tekstile, akvarele, akrilu ir aliejumi. Šoku. Kartais rašau.

Man visa tai nėra skirtingos meno formos.

Tai viena nenutrūkstanti kūrybos tėkmė.

„Minčių tėkmė” gimė ne studijoje.

Ji gimė gyvenime.

Gimus dukroms, mano pasaulis susitraukė iki namų. Beveik penkerius metus netapiau. Nebuvo studijos. Nebuvo drobių. Nebuvo laiko, kuris priklausytų tik man.

Tačiau kūryba niekur nedingo.

Ji tyliai augo manyje.

Kol vieną dieną supratau:

Negaliu netapyti.
